Angelina’s Dramatic Procedure: an act of proactive prevention or misguided intervention?

Hollywood superstar, Angelina Jolie, recently went public with the news that she underwent a voluntary double mastectomy with the intention of preventing breast cancer.

“My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman,” Jolie wrote. “Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.” (1)

The media, from Fox News to the New York Times and CNN, is praising this decision as courageous and admirable. Angelina is being held up as an example for other women to follow. Even the Human Rights Campaign posted a thank you to Angelina “for encouraging other women to take charge of their health.”

But let’s take a step back from the media buzz and think about this one honestly for a moment…

I agree that each woman, each person, should have the right to tend to their own body the way they so choose. And I’m not interested in judging Angelina for her choices. I am, however, concerned when I see the media and the medical industry misleading the public and individuals about cancer, its causes and how to responsibly “take charge of your own health.”

Angelina says “I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices.” (1)

I would amend this statement for myself to include seeking out knowledge of your body’s natural ability to thrive (given the right support) and why cancer has become so prevalent in recent generations.

Here are a few things to consider:

Since 1950, the overall cancer incidence has increased by 44 percent; the incidence of breast cancer and male colon cancer by about 60 percent; testis, prostate and kidney by 100 percent; and other cancers, such as malignant melanoma, multiple myeloma and some lymphomas, by over 100 percent. (2)

Annual production rates for synthetic, carcinogenic and other industrial chemicals exploded from 1 billion pounds in 1940 to more than 500 billion pounds annually during the 1980s. (2)

From Dr. Mercola: “Having “bad genes,” does not at all mean you’re doomed to suffer some inevitable fate. Genes are merely blueprints, and these blueprints are activated and controlled by something else entirely, namely their environment. This environmental information – which includes diet, toxic exposures, as well as thoughts and emotions, and more – can create more than 30,000 different variations from each blueprint, allowing for an astounding amount of leeway in modifying the expression or “read-out” of each gene!” (3)

“The causes of cancer are largely known and have been for some time. Cancer is caused by chemicals in the air we breathe, in the water we drink and in the food we eat.”

—Cancer Wars, Robert Proctor 1997

Here’s how you can be even more courageous and admirable than Angelina…

I know that you want to take care of yourself, prevent cancer in your own body and be an example of health and vitality to the women who look up to you. But I’m guessing that most of you aren’t ready to run out and hand over $15,000 to $50,000 to the medical industry so they can cut off both of your breasts. So what can you do to be even more courageous and admirable than Angelina?

  • Get honest about your own reality and take responsibility for what you’re exposed to. Find out what’s in your food and the products you use…from house cleaners and hair products to make up and air fresheners.
  • Minimize your exposure to carcinogens and other toxic chemicals while effectively detoxing them from your body. If these chemicals are allowed to stay stored in your tissue, you are likely to develop cancer and other fatal diseases.
  • Support your body’s natural strength, health and vitality with super delicious and nourishing whole foods, herbs, superfoods and supplements. Power up your life force and immunity so your body can handle anything!
  • Take good sweet gentle care of your precious self. Love yourself and care for your body with tenderness. Stress and self-hatred are some of the most serious and insidious contributors to the development of disease. As you learn to truly love yourself your vitality and longevity will naturally increase.
  • Monitor your personal situation prudently. If you are high risk or have a genetic propensity in your family take extra care and caution. Educate yourself and treat your body with the utmost respect. If there are tests that can help ease your mind or keep you informed about your personal health without causing risk, take them. But always look beyond what medical “experts” present to you as fact. Remember that they tend to be more knowledgeable about surgery and drugs than health and wellness.
