The Solution to your Resolution

It’s that time of year again…

…Those twinkling lights that set otherwise ordinary lawns aglow slowly diminish, there are trash bags full of crumpled wrapping paper on the curb, you can scan through your radio stations without hearing about your Grandma getting run over by a reindeer (who ever came up with that song, anyway?), and you suddenly realize your belt needs to be loosened by one notch… uh oh.

We all know what it’s like to enter the New Year feeling fatigued from overindulgence and late nights, soon followed by a fierce determination to seek health and happiness in the coming year!  In the aftermath of the Holiday Season, many of us commit to outrageous and unrealistic resolutions in our attempts to ‘bounce back’… and most of us wind up abandoning those plans within weeks.  Sound familiar? If you really want to succeed in your New Year’s resolution this year, seek the support you need to follow through!

Whether your new commitment is to take more time to relax and care for yourself, to exercise more, or to create more space in your life for your family and friends, it’s not uncommon to quickly get swept back up in the hussle and bussle and lose track of your goals. The problem with this, besides obviously not sticking to your resolution, is that it can create self-blame and disappointment, perpetuating a cycle of self-deprecation and unmet goals.

A few years of unsuccessful resolutions can leave you feeling uninspired, burned out and frustrated… but it doesn’t have to be that way.

“If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.”
~Thomas Jefferson

If you’re ready to experience something different, you have to do things differently. Start by following this formula for ‘different’ right here…

Commitment

What is it that you really want? Dream big! Don’t be afraid to just ‘go for it!’ Even if it’s something that you know will require more than this year to achieve, don’t hold yourself back from believing in it. Every success story begins with a dream that ignites passion.

Intention

WHY is this goal important to you? Really tune in and explore the motivation behind this. You may find that your reasons for wanting this are actually quite different than you had thought, or that unveiling the layers of motivation even changes your goal!  And if it does change your goal?  Let it.

Framework

Okay, now that you’ve explored the desires of your Right Brain, allow your Left Brain to hash out the logistics… Realistically, how much time do you need to allow yourself to reach this goal? Factor in enough time to stay up to date with your responsibilities and previous engagements, but also push yourself enough to stay motivated. When will you begin your resolution, what do you need to change or add to your life to make it a reality, and when do you want to reach this goal by?

Accountability

Gather up your support team! Let others in on your goal. Pride often convinces us that we can ‘do it on our own’… but how often is this really just fear in disguise? After all, if we don’t let anyone else in on our plans, then there’s no one else to disappoint if things fall through, right? That’s exactly why you need to include others and ask for their support. Not only does it motivate you to follow through, but it also gives you the love and encouragement needed when you’ve perhaps forgotten just how strong and able you are!

Now that you’ve explored your most creative and passionate dreams… go get it! Know that you are worthy of your love and allow yourself to pursue that which brings you joy.
