Detox Your Mind

Toxins that effect your health come in many forms…from the chemicals in the modern food supply and conventional household products to the toxic thoughts that run around in our heads.

Thoughts related to stress, fear, blame, shame and judgment are as toxic as Red #40 and High Fructose Corn Syrup.

These thoughts activate the fight or flight response that sends a flood of adrenaline and cortisol through your body. This natural response is supposed to be reserved for emergency situations like running away from a saber-toothed tiger.

When modern stressors like traffic, tension in the workplace, rushing from one thing to the next and self-judgment are constantly triggering this response the levels of stress hormones reach toxic levels.

These elevated levels of adrenaline and cortisol suppress immune function and interfere with the digestive system, reproductive system and growth processes. Long-term exposure to these elevated levels increases your risk of health conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, substance abuse and depression.

If these toxic thoughts are allowed to run amuck in your brain they’ll also sabotage every effort you make at living healthfully. Any diet or detox, any goal and any accomplishment can be torn apart by these toxic thoughts.

Toxic thoughts are the most persistent and troublesome obstacles any of if face in our quest to live healthfully. So how do we move through them? This simple three-step process provides a basic approach for liberating ourselves from these pesty buggers.

There are countless approaches to stress management and calming the mind from the most ancient spiritual teachings to the new age self-help practices. Most of them rely on some version of these three basic steps…

  • Stepping Back. Making some space between yourself and your thoughts is essential for clearing out the mental toxicity. As long as you’re completely identified with your thoughts you’re stuck with them. Stepping back and being able to observe your thoughts allows you to figure out which ones are helpful and which ones are harmful so you can start doing some mental housecleaning.
  • Rewriting your mental stories. Once you’re able to observe your thoughts you can start to question them. Do they make sense? Are they true? Are they worth investing in? If the answer to any of these questions is “no” you can rewrite them. You are not obliged to lie to yourself and drag yourself around with these nonsensical and harmful stories. Start telling yourself the truth and creating stories that uplift your spirits and provide positive opportunities for yourself.
  • Centering in the present moment. All toxic thoughts such as guilt, worry, anxiety or blame are located in either the past or the future. In the present moment there is only direct experience. Your physical body and breath are your most powerful tools for centering in the present. Whenever you notice yourself wandering into the past or future you can bring yourself home to the present by connecting in with your body and your breath. When you live from the present moment you are able to think more clearly and experience liberation from all those crazy toxic thoughts.

Freeing yourself from toxic thoughts is easier said than done. These mental patterns are powerful and persistent. That’s what the practices are for. Finding the practices that work for you and actually doing them on a regular basis is the way to clear the toxic thoughts from your brain.

But, with so many practices available, where do you even start?
